When it comes to travel, we believe people are interested in more than just the latest gear and reviews of ludicrously expensive resorts. We know that not every female is in search of the world’s perfect facial. And that people without trust funds travel too.

Mongolia Charity Rally: Racing ambulances to Mongolia - 547

The Mongolia Charity Rally seeks to build Mongolia’s emergency vehicle fleet. Photo from CharityRallies.orgThe Mongolia Charity Rally is all kinds of awesome.

It works like this: medical and healthcare services in Mongolia offer only a modicum of service at the best of times, though it’s free. Urgent treatment is difficult, if impossible, and the available emergency vehicle fleet lacks generators and sockets. The Mongolia Charity Rally—produced by British adventure charity group Go Help—seeks to ameliorate the problem by raising money to benefit Mongolia’s health services and other community projects. In addition, teams of intrepid do-gooders can also band together and take the 10,000 mile journey from London to Mongolia in an emergency vehicle, which will be donated at the end of rally to the country’s first ambulance service.

It is up to each rally team to raise donations for costs (the emergency vehicle, travel incidentals, return trips), but the bulk goes to the $1500 entry fee and the cost of the vehicle used in the rally. The fee goes towards basic admin costs, the Naadam and Go Help charity projects in Mongolia. The BBC linked to the Mongolia Charity Rally early Monday morning, highlighting one team, the Silk Road Warriors, who left that day to join the other teams (the launch of the race was July 9, but other teams could join at different times). So far, the teams of rally-ers have raised a little $27,000 for various charities (besides just Go Help).

As the teams head to Mongolia, many are live blogging their progress with geo-tagged updates. Whether you want to follow their adventures or donate to a good cause, the entire production is definitely something to keep an eye on. Watch the Rally launch video below:
