Banksy Locations app available for iPhone - 551

Banksy-Locations app brings helps you find Banksy’s art. In recent years, the name “Banksy” has conjured up more than its fair share of questions. Who is he? Is his work graffiti or modern art? Vandalism or social commentary? Regardless of how you answer the questions, one thing is certain: Banksy has made quite the name for himself. His street art is iconic, now published in coffee table books around the world, while the Banksy-directed Exit Through the Gift Shop is a look behind the veil of street art and activism. His work influences contemporary artists, while a crop of copycats have sprung up, attempting to emulate his inimitable style.

And while Banksy’s work is readily accessible online, in books and on film, like all art, there’s nothing quite like viewing the original in the context of its space. Well, in the sage wisdom that is Apple, “there’s an app for that”. The new Banksy-Locations app, to be more precise. Search for street art near your current location or postal code, or locate installations featuring the artist’s work. Videos and photo galleries showcasing Banksy’s work are also available, with information contextualizing the piece as well. For Banksy’s new work, there’s the News tab providing updates on locations and pieces.

For $1.99 in the App Store, Banksy-Locations brings the artist’s subversive, pervasive art to the iPhone-toting masses, further democratizing the liberating street art. Or is it graffiti?

On the recommendation of Mashable, I downloaded Tweetie 2 which allowed me to tweet, post pictures and easily connect with others on Twitter (in fact, it’s such a slick app, I now prefer using Tweetie to web-based applications).

Even though I was impressed with these apps, I’m a newb and know there are a lot more out there. So I polled my Twitter & facebook friends about their favorite useful iPhone applications and soon had a long list of things which will likely keep me procrastinating for days…here are five that I thought were the coolest:
